The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a program that trains citizens in Wimauma, Ruskin, and Sun City Center to prepare for and respond to emergencies that may arise in their community. Emergency services personnel can initially become overwhelmed in a major disaster such as a hurricane, leaving citizens alone. CERT training enables citizens to help themselves and their neighbors by applying basic response and organizational skills during emergencies. CERT members can also serve as first responders to an emergency until professional emergency services arrive.

The CERT program offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disasters, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.
